"This" and "that" agree with the noun in gender and number, so Albanian has eight everyday forms where English has four:
| this / these (near) | that / those (far) | |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | ky | ai |
| feminine singular | kjo | ajo |
| masculine plural | këta | ata |
| feminine plural | këto | ato |
The near forms begin with k-; the far forms are the same words as "he, she, they".
The demonstrative goes in front of the noun, and in careful standard Albanian the noun stays without its definite ending: ky libër (this book), kjo shtëpi (this house), këta studentë (these students), ajo kishë (that church). In conversation you will also hear the definite form, ky libri, kjo shtëpia; it is colloquial, so recognise it but write the first version.
When you point at something without naming it, kjo and ajo are the usual choice: Kjo është e mirë - This is good. A waiter in Gjirokastër bringing a plate of qifqi might say Ky është specialiteti ynë - This is our speciality (ky, because specialiteti is masculine).
Because the far forms double as pronouns, ai djalë means "that boy" while Ai është djalë means "He is a boy". Look at what follows: a noun right after ai makes it "that".
