Where English puts a preposition before a noun (in Dhaka, to Rina), Bengali adds a suffix after it. Three suffixes do most of the work:
| Suffix | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -র / -এর -r / -er | of, 's (possession) | রিনার বাড়ি Rinar bari - Rina's house; আমার বই amar boi - my book |
| -কে -ke | to (a person); marks a person as object | রিনাকে বলো। Rinake bolo - Tell Rina. |
| -এ / -তে / -য় -e / -te / -y | in, at (place); also time | ঢাকায় Dhakay - in Dhaka; বাড়িতে barite - at home |
Tip: think of the suffix as an English preposition that has moved to the end and fused with the word: Dhaka-in, Rina-to, Rina-'s.
