L'alfabeto italiano ha 21 lettere. Le lettere J, K, W, X, Y si trovano solo in parole straniere. Ogni lettera ha un nome preciso usato per fare lo spelling.

Regole di pronuncia importanti:

Lettera/GruppoPronunciaEsempio
C + e/i[tʃ] come in cinquecena, ciao
C + a/o/u[k] come in casacosa, cuore
G + e/i[dʒ] come in gelatogente, giro
G + a/o/u[g] come in gattogonna, gusto
GN[ɲ] come in bagnognocchi, ognuno
GL + i[ʎ] come in figliofamiglia, aglio
SC + e/i[ʃ] come in scenapesce, sci

Le doppie consonanti sono fondamentali in italiano. Cambiano il significato: pala (shovel) ≠ palla (ball), caro (dear) ≠ carro (cart), nono (ninth) ≠ nonno (grandfather). Le doppie si pronunciano più lunghe e con più forza.

L'accento cade di solito sulla penultima sillaba: pa-RO-la, ra-GAZ-zo. L'accento grafico si scrive solo sull'ultima sillaba: città, perché, caffè.

Learners often ignore double consonants, but in Italian they change word meaning (pala≠palla, caro≠carro). Also, C and G change pronunciation before e/i vs a/o/u. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Tend to reduce unstressed vowels to schwa (Italian vowels are always clear). Struggle with rolling R and double consonants.

Häufige Fehlermuster

Missing or incorrect double consonant that changes word meaning

Practice minimal pairs: pala/palla, caro/carro, nono/nonno. Listen and repeat.

Incorrect pronunciation of C or G before different vowels

Remember: C/G + e/i = soft [tʃ]/[dʒ]; C/G + a/o/u = hard [k]/[g]. Use H to keep hard before e/i: che, chi, ghe, ghi.
