English has two ways to compare: "bigger" and "more expensive". Luxembourgish mostly uses the second one: méi (more) in front of the plain adjective, and wéi for "than".
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| grouss - big | méi grouss - bigger | am gréissten - the biggest |
| kleng - small | méi kleng - smaller | am klengsten - the smallest |
| gutt - good | besser - better | am beschten - the best |
| vill - much, many | méi - more | am meeschten - the most |
| gär - gladly (liking) | léiwer - rather | am léifsten - most of all |
Esch ass méi kleng wéi d'Stad. - Esch is smaller than Luxembourg City. Lëtzebuerg ass méi kleng wéi d'Belsch. - Luxembourg is smaller than Belgium. If you know German, note that Luxembourgish says wéi where standard German says als. "As ... as" uses sou ... wéi: Hatt ass sou grouss wéi säi Brudder. - She is as tall as her brother.
After a verb, the superlative is am ...sten: Vun eis dräi ass d'Lisa am gréissten. - Of the three of us, Lisa is the tallest. In front of a noun it takes the article and the normal adjective ending: de beschte Kach - the best cook, déi gréisst Stad - the biggest city.
This is how Luxembourgish says what you like and prefer: Ech drénke gär Téi, ech drénke léiwer Kaffi, an am léifsten drénken ech e Cremant. - I like tea, I prefer coffee, and best of all I like a glass of Crémant.
The English-speaker mistake is building *grousser or *klenger by analogy with "bigger"; use méi grouss, and learn the few one-word comparatives like besser and léiwer as vocabulary.
