Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?
Luxembourgish counts like German: from 21 on, the units come before the tens, joined by an (and). Twenty-one is "one-and-twenty". This is the part English speakers trip over, especially with phone numbers and prices.
| 1 eent | 6 sechs | 11 eelef | 16 siechzéng |
| 2 zwee | 7 siwen | 12 zwielef | 17 siwwenzéng |
| 3 dräi | 8 aacht | 13 dräizéng | 18 uechtzéng |
| 4 véier | 9 néng | 14 véierzéng | 19 nonzéng |
| 5 fënnef | 10 zéng | 15 fofzéng | 20 zwanzeg |
30 drësseg, 40 véierzeg, 50 fofzeg, 60 sechzeg, 70 siwwenzeg, 80 achtzeg, 90 nonzeg, 100 honnert.
Notice the irregular stems: 15 and 50 use fof-, not fënnef-, and 16 to 19 change the spelling of the unit (siechzéng, siwwenzéng, uechtzéng, nonzéng).
| Number | Luxembourgish | Literally |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | eenanzwanzeg | one-and-twenty |
| 35 | fënnefandrësseg | five-and-thirty |
| 48 | aachtavéierzeg | eight-and-forty |
| 67 | siwenasechzeg | seven-and-sixty |
The joining an follows the n-rule too: it keeps its -n before d, z and vowels (fënnefandrësseg, eenanzwanzeg) and becomes a before other consonants (aachtavéierzeg, siwenasechzeg).
Counting, you say eent, zwee, dräi. In front of a noun, "one" and "two" agree with its gender: een Euro, eng Taass - one cup; zwee Kanner - two children, but zwou Fraen - two women. Zwou is the feminine "two", a form German no longer has.
At the bakery: Dat mécht véierandrësseg Euro. - That's thirty-four euros. Listen for the unit first.
