Pytania — Questions

Polish has two question types: yes/no (with czy) and wh-questions (with question words).

Word order is flexible — Czy can be omitted in speech (rising intonation marks the question). Kto always takes 3rd person singular verb.

Learners omit czy in formal writing, or use it with wh-words (*Czy co robisz?). Also, kto always takes singular verb even when expecting plural answer. English speakers: No equivalent of czy — English uses inversion (Do you speak...?). Flexible word order feels strange. Russian speakers: Very similar system — ли is like czy (but postpositive), кто/что/где/когда/как/почему map directly. Czech speakers: Nearly identical — Czech doesn't use a czy-equivalent as consistently, but question words (co/kdo/kde/kdy/jak/proč) map 1:1.
