Was haben sie gemeinsam?

The DELE A2 does not reward exotic grammar. It rewards getting your message across with ease, and a small kit of phrases covers most of the tasks: telling a story in the past, giving an opinion, comparing two options, writing a short email - and getting out of trouble when a word escapes you.

Telling a story (the past-narrative task)

StepPhrasesEnglish
StartingHace unos meses... / Last summer... / I remember once...
Moving onEntonces... / Luego... / Al rato... / Mientras tanto...Then... / Later... / A little while later... / Meanwhile...
FinishingAl final... / Total, que... / Desde entonces...In the end... / So anyway... / Ever since...

Total, que is very Spanish: it wraps up a story the way "so, long story short" does.

Giving your opinion

Creo que... / Me parece que... / Para mí... / La verdad es que... / Depende de... To avoid committing yourself: Bueno, según cómo se mire - "Well, it depends how you look at it". Note that creo que and me parece que take the indicative; it is no creo que that takes the subjunctive.

Comparing two options (a classic exam task)

Prefiero X porque... / Lo bueno de X es que... / En cambio, Y es más... / Los dos están bien, pero... - "I prefer X because... / The good thing about X is... / On the other hand, Y is more... / They're both fine, but..."

When you cannot find the word

Examiners count this as a communication strategy, not a failure, so use it openly:

  • ¿Cómo se dice...? - How do you say...?
  • Es una cosa que sirve para... - It's a thing you use for...
- I don't know what it's called, but it's like a...
  • ¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor? - Could you repeat that, please?
  • Perdón, no le he entendido bien. - Sorry, I didn't quite understand you.

An email or note (the writing task)

  • Greeting: Hola, Marta: / Querida Ana: - Spanish uses a colon after the greeting where English uses a comma.
  • Reason: Te escribo para contarte... / Te escribo porque quería preguntarte... - I'm writing to tell you... / because I wanted to ask you...
  • Closing: Un abrazo. / Un saludo. / Nos vemos pronto. - A hug (warm, between friends) / Best wishes / See you soon.

The A2 writing task is usually informal, so do not memorise long formal formulas; Le saluda atentamente in an email to a friend sounds comic.

Fillers that buy you time

Real spoken Spanish is full of them, and they let you think without sounding like a textbook: bueno, pues, o sea (I mean), es que, la verdad, ¿sabes?, vamos (I mean, basically). One here and there sounds native; one after another does not.

Übungsaufgaben
Do not memorise long formal formulas for a friendly email — the A2 written task is usually informal. And note the colon after the greeting: 'Hola, Marta:' is Spanish punctuation, 'Hola Marta,' is English punctuation. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German written formality is higher; a German-style formal letter in an A2 informal task loses marks for register, not for grammar.
