English "for" splits into two Spanish words, and so do bits of "by", "through" and "in order to". No single translation sorts them out. The picture that works best: por looks back - to the cause, the source, the route you take - and para looks ahead - to the goal, the destination, the person who will receive something.
| POR - looking back | PARA - looking ahead |
|---|---|
| Cause: Lo hice por ti. - I did it because of you / for your sake. | Purpose, recipient: Lo hice para ti. - I made it for you (it's yours). |
| Route, through: Paseamos por el Retiro. - We strolled through the Retiro. | Destination: Salimos para el Retiro. - We're setting off for the Retiro. |
| Rough time: Por Navidad vamos al pueblo. - Around Christmas we go to the village. | Deadline: El informe es para el lunes. - The report is due Monday. |
| Exchange, price: Lo compré por veinte euros. | Opinion: Para mí, esto está soso. - For me, this is bland. |
| Means: Te lo mando por correo. - I'll send it by post. | Intended for: Esta carta es para el casero. - This letter is for the landlord. |
| Rate: Dos veces por semana. - Twice a week. | Employer: Trabaja para una empresa alemana. |
Before an infinitive, "in order to" is always the purpose reading, so it is para: Voy al mercado para comprar fruta. English often drops "in order", which is why learners reach for por - ask yourself whether you could add "in order to".
Hoy trabajo por Ana, que está enferma - "I'm working in Ana's place today" - is not the same as Trabajo para Ana, "I work for Ana; she's my boss". The same split runs through firmar por alguien (sign on someone's behalf).
Many uses are best learned whole. With por: por favor, por supuesto (of course), por fin (at last), por eso (that's why), por ahora (for now), por si acaso (just in case), por cierto (by the way). With para: para siempre (for ever), para nada (not at all), para colmo (to top it all).
