- Greet someone with the universal greeting ሰላም (selam) and the formal ጤና ይስጥልኝ (tena yistilign)
- Introduce yourself: ስሜ ... ነው (sime ... new — My name is ...)
- Ask how someone is using the correct form for a man (እንዴት ነህ? indet neh?), a woman (እንዴት ነሽ? indet nesh?), or politely (እንዴት ነዎት? indet newot?)
- Say where you are from: ከአዲስ አበባ ነኝ (ke-Addis Abeba negn — I am from Addis Ababa)
- Say goodbye correctly: ደህና ሁን (dehna hun — to a man), ደህና ሁኚ (dehna hugni — to a woman), ደህና ይሁኑ (dehna yihunu — polite)
- Recognise the Ge'ez syllabary (fidel) as a system where each symbol represents a consonant + vowel combination
