6 Cases Overview
Belarusian has 6 cases — same number as Russian and Czech!
| Case | Belarusian | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | назоўны | хто? што? | кніга (book) |
| Genitive | родны | каго? чаго? | кнігі (of a book) |
| Dative | давальны | каму? чаму? | кнізе (to a book) |
| Accusative | вінавальны | каго? што? | кнігу (book — object) |
| Instrumental | творны | кім? чым? | кнігай (with a book) |
| Locative | месны | аб кім? аб чым? | аб кнізе (about a book) |
At A1, focus on nominative (subject) and locative (location with у/на).
RU speakers: using Russian case endings instead of Belarusian ones. EN/DE speakers: struggling with case concept. All: forgetting locative with prepositions.
Common Error Patterns
Using Russian case endings
Belarusian endings differ! у Мінску (not в Минске), на стале (not на столе with е).
Я жыву ў Мінску.
I live in Minsk.
Мінск → ў Мінску (locative case with у). Like Russian: в Минске.
Кніга на стале.
The book is on the table.
стол → на стале (locative with на). The ending changes to show location!
Гэта мая сям'я.
This is my family.
сям'я in nominative (subject). The apostrophe ' is unique to Belarusian!
