Adjetivos demostrativos

Demonstrative adjectives: este/ese/aquel and their feminine/plural forms

Learning Goal

Can use demonstrative adjectives for three distance levels and make them agree with nouns

Exam Skills:Comprensión de lecturaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Esta casa es muy bonita.

This house is very pretty.

¿Puedo ver ese reloj?

Can I see that watch?

Aquellas montañas son los Pirineos.

Those mountains (over there) are the Pyrenees.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Los adjetivos demostrativos señalan la distancia entre el hablante y el objeto.

DistanciaMasc. Sing.Fem. Sing.Masc. Pl.Fem. Pl.
Cerca (here)esteestaestosestas
Media (there)eseesaesosesas
Lejos (over there)aquelaquellaaquellosaquellas

Tres niveles de distancia (español tiene un sistema más preciso que el inglés this/that):

  • Este libro = this book (near me)
  • Ese libro = that book (near you)
  • Aquel libro = that book (over there, far from both)

Sin artículo: Este libro (no *el este libro). El demostrativo reemplaza al artículo.

Nota: Los demostrativos también pueden ser pronombres (sin sustantivo): ¿Cuál quieres? — Este.

Practice Exercises
English has only this/that (2 levels), but Spanish has 3 levels (este/ese/aquel). Learners often ignore 'aquel' and only use este/ese. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Only 2 distance levels in English. The three-way distinction (este/ese/aquel) is new. Also, all forms must agree in gender/number.

Esta casa es muy bonita.

This house is very pretty.

'Casa' is feminine → 'esta' (not este). Near the speaker = este/esta/estos/estas.

¿Puedo ver ese reloj?

Can I see that watch?

'Ese' = that (near the listener, medium distance). 'Reloj' is masculine → ese (not esa).

Aquellas montañas son los Pirineos.

Those mountains (over there) are the Pyrenees.

'Aquel' = that (far from both speaker and listener). 'Montañas' is feminine plural → aquellas.
