过的用法
The particle 过 (guò) after a verb indicates that someone has experienced something at some point in the past.
Structure: Subject + Verb + 过 + Object
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 我去过中国。 | Wǒ qù guò Zhōngguó. | I have been to China. |
| 你吃过寿司吗? | Nǐ chī guò shòusī ma? | Have you ever eaten sushi? |
了 vs 过: 了 marks a specific completed action; 过 marks general life experience. Compare: 我吃了寿司 (I ate sushi [just now]) vs 我吃过寿司 (I've eaten sushi [at some point]).
Negation: 没(有) + Verb + 过: 我没去过日本 (I've never been to Japan).
Common Error Patterns
Confused 了 (completion) with 过 (experience)
了 = specific completed event (I ate sushi just now); 过 = life experience (I have eaten sushi before).
我去过北京。
I have been to Beijing.
过 after 去 (qù, go) expresses that Beijing is a place you have visited in your life experience.
你看过这本书吗?
Have you ever read this book?
过 + 吗 forms a 'have you ever' question. 看 (kàn) here means 'read'.
我没吃过臭豆腐。
I have never eaten stinky tofu.
没 + Verb + 过 means 'have never done'. 过 stays (unlike 了 which is dropped after 没).
