El coche del vecino es rojo.

The neighbor's car is red.

Voy a la escuela, no al parque.

I'm going to the school, not to the park.

de + eldelVengo del trabajo. (= de + el trabajo)

Reglas importantes:

  • La contracción es obligatoria. No se puede decir *a el ni *de el.
  • No se contrae con él (pronombre): Es de él. (= It's his.)

  • al final de = at the end of

Usos frecuentes de «del»:

  • cerca del parque = near the park
  • lejos del centro = far from the center
  • el libro del profesor = the teacher's book

Practice Exercises
Writing *'a el' or *'de el' instead of 'al'/'del'. Also applying contraction to pronouns (*'al' instead of 'a él'). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no similar mandatory contractions with articles, so learners forget to apply them. Also confuse 'del' with possessives.

Voy al supermercado.

I'm going to the supermarket.

'al' = a + el. The contraction is mandatory. You cannot say *'Voy a el supermercado'.

El coche del vecino es rojo.

The neighbor's car is red.

'del' = de + el. Expresses possession: the car OF THE neighbor.

Voy a la escuela, no al parque.

I'm going to the school, not to the park.

No contraction with 'la': 'a la escuela'. But contraction with 'el': 'al parque'.
