Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

J'ai un frère et une sœur.

I have a brother and a sister.

Il y a des pommes sur la table.

There are (some) apples on the table.

Je n'ai pas de voiture.

I don't have a car.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Les articles indéfinis s'utilisent pour parler de quelque chose de non spécifique ou mentionné pour la première fois :

GenreSingulierPluriel
Masculinun livredes livres / tables
Fémininune table

Emplois :

  • Première mention : J'ai un chien. (I have a dog.)
  • Profession : Il est médecin. (pas d'article !) mais C'est un médecin.
  • Quantité indéfinie : Il y a des fleurs dans le jardin.

Négation : Un/une/des → de/d' après une négation : J'ai un chatJe n'ai pas de chat. J'ai des amisJe n'ai pas d'amis.

Attention : Des n'est pas le pluriel de du (partitif). Des = some (countable), du = some (uncountable).

Forgetting that des becomes de/d' in negation; confusing des (indefinite) with des (partitive). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'a/an' for singular but has no plural indefinite article (just 'some' or nothing). Learners forget 'des' in plural contexts.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong gender for indefinite article (un vs une)

Un = masculine, une = feminine. Learn each noun with its article.

Kept un/une/des in negation instead of changing to de/d'

After ne...pas, un/une/des always become de or d'. Example: J'ai des amis → Je n'ai pas d'amis.

J'ai un frère et une sœur.

I have a brother and a sister.

Un (masculine) for frère, une (feminine) for sœur. First mention = indefinite article.

Il y a des pommes sur la table.

There are (some) apples on the table.

Des is the plural indefinite article. English often uses no article here, but French requires des.

Je n'ai pas de voiture.

I don't have a car.

In negation, un/une/des become de (or d' before a vowel). J'ai une voiture → Je n'ai pas DE voiture.
