'I have': მაქვს vs მყავს

Georgian splits possession by animacy. მაქვს = I have (a thing): მანქანა მაქვს (I have a car). მყავს = I have (someone alive): ძაღლი მყავს (I have a dog), ორი ძმა მყავს (I have two brothers).

Person is marked by prefixes: მ- (I), გ- (you), no prefix/ჰ- (he/she): მაქვს, გაქვს, აქვს / მყავს, გყავს, ჰყავს.

Using მაქვს for pets or family members (*კატა მაქვს) - living beings take მყავს. Trying to conjugate with ვ- like ordinary verbs - 'have' uses the prefix series მ-/გ-/ჰ-. Adding a plural after numerals: ორი ძმა მყავს (singular ძმა).

Common Error Patterns

makvs/mqavs animacy confusion

Sort nouns into 'things' vs 'alive' and drill both paradigms.

მანქანა მაქვს.

I have a car.

მაქვს for things; the construction mirrors Russian 'у меня есть'.

ძაღლი მყავს, კატა არ მყავს.

I have a dog, I don't have a cat.

მყავს for animals; negation with არ before the verb.

დრო გაქვს?

Do you have time?

გ- prefix = you: გაქვს (you have a thing).
