Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

საქართველოს დროშა თეთრი და წითელია.

Georgia's flag is white and red.

მწვანე ჩაი მირჩევნია შავ ჩაის.

I prefer green tea to black tea.

ლურჯი ცა და თეთრი მთები - ეს სვანეთია.

Blue sky and white mountains - that is Svaneti.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Colors, and a one-letter rule

Core colors: წითელი (red), ლურჯი (blue), მწვანე (green), ყვითელი (yellow), შავი (black), თეთრი (white). The grammar point: an attributive adjective does NOT decline - it just drops its final -ი when the noun takes a case ending: წითელი ვაშლი → წითელ ვაშლს. Adjectives in -ე (მწვანე) do not even truncate.

Practice Exercises

Slavic-style full agreement (*ts'itels vashls, *tetrebi mtebi) - the Georgian adjective only truncates, it never copies case or number.

Common Error Patterns

Declining or pluralizing the attributive adjective instead of truncating it

Truncation drills: ts'iteli vashli - ts'itel vashls across the cases.

საქართველოს დროშა თეთრი და წითელია.

Georgia's flag is white and red.

Predicate adjectives keep full -i and take the copula: tetria, ts'itelia.

მწვანე ჩაი მირჩევნია შავ ჩაის.

I prefer green tea to black tea.

Before the dative noun the adjective truncates: shavi - shav chais.

ლურჯი ცა და თეთრი მთები - ეს სვანეთია.

Blue sky and white mountains - that is Svaneti.

In the nominative the adjective keeps -i and never agrees in number: tetri mtebi.
