El libro está en la mesa.

The book is on the table.

El problema es grande.

The problem is big.

La mano es pequeña.

The hand is small.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Assuming all -a words are feminine (el día, el mapa, el problema are masculine!). Also forgetting that abbreviations keep the gender of the full word (la foto, la moto). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no grammatical gender, so every noun's gender must be memorized. Tend to guess based on meaning rather than form.

El libro está en la mesa.

The book is on the table.

'Libro' ends in -o → masculine (el). 'Mesa' ends in -a → feminine (la). The article must match the noun's gender.

El problema es grande.

The problem is big.

Exception! 'Problema' ends in -a but is MASCULINE (el problema). Words ending in -ma from Greek are usually masculine.

La mano es pequeña.

The hand is small.

Exception! 'Mano' ends in -o but is FEMININE (la mano). This is one of very few -o words that are feminine.
