Ordinal numbers: primero through décimo
Can use ordinal numbers 1st-10th with correct gender agreement and shortening
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Vivo en el tercer piso.
I live on the third floor.
Es la primera vez que visito España.
It's the first time I visit Spain.
Vive en el piso quince.
He lives on the fifteenth floor.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Los números ordinales indican posición u orden. En español, solo los diez primeros se usan comúnmente:

Reglas:
- Ordinales concuerdan en género y número: la primera vez, los primeros días
- Primero y tercero pierden la -o antes de sustantivo masculino singular: el primer piso, el tercer libro
- Después del 10, se usan cardinales: el piso quince (not *el piso decimoquinto)
Vivo en el tercer piso.
I live on the third floor.
tercero → tercer before masculine singular noun. 'Piso' is masculine → el tercer piso.
Es la primera vez que visito España.
It's the first time I visit Spain.
'Vez' is feminine → primera (not primero). Primera keeps full form because 'vez' is feminine.
Vive en el piso quince.
He lives on the fifteenth floor.
After 10, Spanish uses cardinal numbers instead of ordinals: piso quince (not *piso decimoquinto).
