Merkregel: Nicht steht vor dem Element, das verneint wird, aber nach dem direkten Objekt: Ich trinke den Kaffee nicht.

nicht placed in wrong position
nicht goes: before predicative adjectives, before prepositional phrases, at end for general negation, before the element being negated
Used nicht instead of kein before a noun
Use kein before nouns with ein/no article: nicht ein → kein. Use nicht for everything else.
Used both nicht and kein or double negative
German uses single negation: Ich habe KEIN Geld (not: Ich habe nicht kein Geld)

Nicht goes to the end when negating the whole sentence.
Das Wetter ist nicht schön.
The weather is not nice.
Nicht comes before the adjective it negates: nicht schön.
Er kommt nicht aus Berlin.
He is not from Berlin.
Nicht comes before the prepositional phrase: nicht aus Berlin.
