Vokaalit
Suomessa on 8 vokaalia:

Vokaalisointu
Suomessa on vokaalisointu: samassa sanassa ei voi olla sekä takavokaaleja (a, o, u) että etuvokaaleja (ä, ö, y). Esimerkiksi: talo (taka), pöytä (etu).
Pitkät vokaalit ja konsonantit
Kaksoiskirjaimet ovat tärkeitä: tuli (fire) vs. tuuli (wind) vs. tulli (customs).
EN speakers: Confusing ä [æ] with a [ɑ], and y [y] with English 'y'. RU speakers: Finnish y [y] ≈ Russian ю but front-rounded. DE speakers: Finnish ä/ö/y are close to German ä/ö/ü — advantage! All: Ignoring vowel length differences that change meaning (tuli/tuuli/tulli).
