Existence verbs — いる for animate beings, ある for inanimate things
Can express existence and location using いる (animate) and ある (inanimate)

There is a book on the desk.

いる・ある — Existence
Japanese has TWO existence verbs:
| Verb | For | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| いる/います | Animate (people, animals) | 猫がいます, 先生がいます |
| ある/あります | Inanimate (objects, plants) | 本があります, 木があります |
Pattern: [Place] に [Thing] が いる/ある。= There is [thing] at [place].
Also: [Thing] は [Place] に いる/ある。= [Thing] is at [place]. (when the thing is the topic)
Using ある for people/animals (人がある× → 人がいる○); Using は instead of が when announcing existence
机の上に本があります。
There is a book on the desk.
机(つくえ, desk) + の + 上(うえ, on) + に(location) + 本(ほん, book) + が + あります(exists, inanimate)
庭に猫がいます。
There is a cat in the garden.
庭(にわ, garden) + に(location) + 猫(ねこ, cat) + が + います(exists, animate)
