この・その・あの — Demonstrative Modifiers
Used BEFORE a noun to specify which one:

| これ (this thing) | この + noun | この本 (this book) |
| それ (that thing) | その + noun | その本 (that book) |
| あれ (that over there) | あの + noun | あの本 (that book over there) |
| どれ (which thing) | どの + noun | どの本 (which book) |
Key difference: これ stands alone (pronoun); この modifies a noun (adjective-like). You can't say この alone — it must be followed by a noun.
Using これ instead of この before a noun (これ本× → この本○)
この映画はおもしろいです。
This movie is interesting.
この(this) + 映画(えいが, movie) + は + おもしろい(interesting) + です
