Belarusian word order is free but not arbitrary: what is known comes first, what is new comes last, and moving a word changes what the sentence is about.
I can order a Belarusian sentence to put the new information last and use particles to emphasise a chosen word.

Учора прыехаў брат.
It was my brother who arrived yesterday.
Брат прыехаў учора.
My brother arrived yesterday.
Нават дзеці зразумелі гэтае правіла.
Even the children understood this rule.
Ты ж ведаеш, дзе я жыву.
You know perfectly well where I live.
Зверніть увагу на виділені частини. Що у них спільного?
Because the cases mark who does what, Belarusian can put words in almost any order. What the order carries instead is information structure: the known part first, the new part last. The last position is the stressed one.
| Sentence | Answers |
|---|---|
| Брат прыехаў учора. | What did your brother do? |
| Учора прыехаў брат. | Who arrived yesterday? |
| Прыехаў брат учора. | When did he arrive? |
| Брат учора прыехаў. | Did he really arrive? |
All four are correct. Choosing among them is not style - it is answering the right question.
Before you write a sentence, ask what question it is answering. The answer goes at the end. This one habit fixes most word-order awkwardness.
With no particular emphasis: subject, verb, object, and adverbials of time and place at the front or the back. Учора мы былі ў тэатры. Adjectives precede their noun (стары дом); reversing them is a poetic device, not a neutral option.
The particle attaches to the word it emphasises and moves with it. Putting it elsewhere changes what is being stressed.
The short forms - бы, ж, ся - cannot start a sentence and cling to the word they belong with. Ці ж не праўда?, Прыйшоў бы раней.

Вправи для практикиTypical errors: keeping a fixed English order regardless of emphasis, and putting an emphasising particle away from the word it belongs to.
Keeping one order regardless of emphasis
Ask what question the sentence answers; the answer goes last.
Separating a particle from its word
Нават, толькі and якраз move with what they stress.
Starting a sentence with бы, ж or ся
They cling to a preceding word.
Putting the adjective after the noun as neutral
That is a poetic device; neutral order is стары дом.
Учора прыехаў брат.
It was my brother who arrived yesterday.
The new information is брат, so it goes last.
Брат прыехаў учора.
My brother arrived yesterday.
The same words, but now the time is what is new.
Нават дзеці зразумелі гэтае правіла.
Even the children understood this rule.
Нават attaches to the word it emphasises.
Ты ж ведаеш, дзе я жыву.
You know perfectly well where I live.
The clitic ж adds insistence and cannot start the sentence.
Якраз пра гэта я і кажу.
That is exactly what I am saying.
Якраз and і together sharpen the focus.
