Morphonology: what happens at the seams

Alternation, insertion and loss where a stem meets an ending - the systematic changes that make a paradigm look irregular when it is not.

Мета навчання

I can apply the alternations automatically and recognise the forms of one root however different they look.

Балюча на назе, ды і рука ные.

My leg hurts, and my arm aches too.

Я хаджу пешшу, а ён вадзіць машыну.

I walk, and he drives.

Дзень доўгі, а да канца дня яшчэ далёка.

The day is long, and the end of it is still far off.

У мяне пяць сясцёр і адзін брат.

I have five sisters and one brother.

The seam

Most Belarusian irregularity is not irregularity at all: it is a small set of changes that fire wherever a stem meets a particular ending. Learn the changes and whole paradigms stop needing memorisation.

Consonant alternation

AlternationBeforeExample
г → з, ж-е, -і / verb endingsнага → назе, магу → можаш
к → ц, ч-е, -і / verb endingsрука → руцэ, пячы → пячэш
х → с, ш-е, -імуха → мусе
д → дз, джsoft vowelsвада → вадзе, хадзіць → хаджу
т → ц, чsoft vowelsхата → хаце, круціць → кручу
с → ш, з → жverb endingsнасіць → нашу, вазіць → важу

The fleeting vowel

Some stems carry a vowel that appears in one form and vanishes in the next:

 • дзень - дня, сон - сну, лоб - лба
 • and the reverse in the genitive plural: сястра - сясцёр, вокны - вокан

The vowel appears where the cluster would otherwise be hard to say, which is why it turns up exactly in the endingless forms.

Prefix adjustments

Prefixes ending in a consonant take a vowel before a difficult cluster: аб- → аба- in абабраць, з- → са- in сабраць, ад- → ада- in адабраць. And the з of a prefix hardens or softens with what follows: зрабіць but сказаць.

Vowel changes carried by stress

Because akanne and jakanne are written, every stress shift rewrites the vowels too - which means a single Belarusian root can surface with three or four different vowel letters. Нёс - несла - насіць is one root in three spellings, and only the last step is akanne: unstressed е is written а. Ноша belongs to the same root but its о is older than akanne - it is inherited ablaut, the e-grade and o-grade of one Proto-Slavic root, which is why recognising a root means knowing both mechanisms.

Why this is worth a whole article

At C1 the value is in reading. Recognising that ваджу, вадзіць and вазіў are one verb, or that сясцёр belongs to сястра, is what lets you use a dictionary efficiently and read without stopping.

Вправи для практики

Typical errors: not applying an alternation where the ending requires it, and failing to recognise related forms of one root when reading.

Типові помилки

Not applying an alternation the ending requires

Нага gives назе, рука gives руцэ.

Missing the д to дз and т to ц alternations

These have no Russian equivalent: вадзе, хаце.

Keeping or dropping the fleeting vowel wrongly

Дзень but дня; сястра but сясцёр.

Not recognising related forms of one root

Нёс, несла and насіць are one verb family.

Балюча на назе, ды і рука ные.

My leg hurts, and my arm aches too.

Нага gives назе - the г to з alternation before -е.

Я хаджу пешшу, а ён вадзіць машыну.

I walk, and he drives.

Хадзіць gives хаджу: д becomes дж in the first person.

Дзень доўгі, а да канца дня яшчэ далёка.

The day is long, and the end of it is still far off.

The fleeting vowel: дзень but дня.

У мяне пяць сясцёр і адзін брат.

I have five sisters and one brother.

Сястра gives сясцёр: a vowel inserted and the т softened.

Ён нёс мяшок, а яна несла кошык.

He was carrying a sack and she a basket.

One root, two vowel spellings, decided by the stress.
