Зверніть увагу на виділені частини. Що у них спільного?
Un and une correspond to English "a/an"; des is their plural. English has no plural "a", so it usually says nothing (des pommes - apples) or "some". In French a countable noun rarely stands bare, so des has to be there.
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | un livre - a book | des livres, des tables |
| Feminine | une table - a table |
After ne... pas the indefinite article turns into de (d' before a vowel): J'ai un chat. → Je n'ai pas de chat. - I don't have a cat. J'ai des amis à Lyon. → Je n'ai pas d'amis à Lyon. English "not any" is a good memory hook. The change does not happen after être: Ce n'est pas un problème.
Both can come out as "some" in English, but they are different words. Des goes with things you count (des croissants), du with things you do not (du pain). Des is not the plural of du.
