Подивіться на ці приклади. Чи можете ви помітити граматичну закономірність?

J'aime la France mais je ne parle pas bien français.

I love France but I don't speak French well.

Je reste à la maison parce qu'il pleut.

I'm staying home because it's raining.

Il fait beau, donc on va se promener.

The weather is nice, so we're going for a walk.

Зверніть увагу на виділені частини. Що у них спільного?

Conjunctions join words, phrases and whole sentences. The basic French set maps closely onto English, with one difference: French has three words for "because", and they are not interchangeable.

ConjunctionMeaningExample
etandJ'aime le café et le thé.
ouorTu veux du café ou du thé ?
maisbutC'est cher, mais c'est bon.
parce quebecauseJe suis fatigué parce que j'ai beaucoup travaillé.
carbecause, for (more formal)Le musée est fermé, car c'est lundi.
commeas, since (at the start)Comme il pleut, on reste à la maison.
doncso, thereforeIl pleut, donc je prends un parapluie.
alorsso, then (spoken)Il fait beau, alors on va à la plage !

Three ways to say "because"

  • Parce que answers a question with pourquoi and is the everyday choice: Pourquoi tu ris ? - Parce que c'est drôle.
  • Car is more formal and mostly written; it normally comes in the middle of the sentence, and it cannot answer a question with pourquoi.
  • Comme gives the reason first, at the start of the sentence: Comme le TGV est en retard, on prend un café. - As the TGV is late, we're having a coffee.

Parce que shortens to parce qu' before a vowel: parce qu'il est malade.

Watch out

Ou (or) has no accent; où (where) does. In speech, et never links to the next word: et après is [e apʁɛ], with no t sound. And donc is not filler the way English "so" can be; to start a story casually, French says alors or bon.
