Būt (to be) is irregular in Latvian, as it is in English. In the present:
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| es | esmu | Es esmu skolotājs. - I'm a teacher. |
| tu | esi | Tu esi gudra. - You're clever. (to a woman) |
| viņš / viņa | ir | Viņš ir šeit. - He's here. |
| mēs | esam | Mēs esam gatavi. - We're ready. |
| jūs | esat | Jūs esat laipni. - You're kind. |
| viņi / viņas | ir | Viņi ir no Vācijas. - They're from Germany. |
The third person is ir in the singular and plural alike: viņš ir, viņi ir.
Latvian has no articles: Es esmu students - I'm a student. Adjectives agree with the subject: Viņš ir laimīgs (He's happy), Viņa ir laimīga (She's happy).
The negative of ir is a separate word, nav, not *neir. The other persons add ne-:
| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| esmu, esi | neesmu, neesi |
| ir | nav |
| esam, esat | neesam, neesat |
Viņa nav mājās. - She's not at home. Es neesmu noguris. - I'm not tired.
Ir also means "there is": Rīgā ir daudz parku - There are many parks in Riga. With a dative it means "have": Man ir brālis - I have a brother. In the negative, the thing that is missing goes into the genitive: Man nav laika - I have no time; Šodien nav sniega - There's no snow today. English speakers tend to keep the nominative here (*Man nav laiks); after nav in this sense, switch to the genitive.
