Persian adjectives are easy on form and strict on position. They do not change for number or gender, but they follow the noun and are tied to it with the ezafe: شهرِ زیبا (shahr-e zibâ) - a beautiful city.
Romanization follows Tehran pronunciation: â is the long a, kh is the "ch" of Scottish loch, gh stands for both غ and ق, and ' marks a glottal stop.
As a predicate the adjective comes before the verb: هوا گرم است (havâ garm ast, written), هوا گرمه (havâ garm-e, spoken) - It's hot. خیلی (kheyli) - very - goes in front: خیلی خوشمزه (kheyli khoshmaze) - very tasty.
Add -تر (-tar) to the adjective and use از (az) for 'than'. The than-phrase comes before the adjective:
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| بزرگ (bozorg) big | بزرگتر (bozorgtar) | بزرگترین (bozorgtarin) |
| کوچک (kuchak) small | کوچکتر (kuchaktar) | کوچکترین (kuchaktarin) |
| خوب (khub) good | بهتر (behtar) | بهترین (behtarin) |
| زیاد (ziyâd) much | بیشتر (bishtar) | بیشترین (bishtarin) |
| کم (kam) little | کمتر (kamtar) | کمترین (kamtarin) |
خوبتر (khubtar) is heard in speech, but بهتر is the standard 'better'. Standard spelling writes -تر and -ترین after a non-joiner (بزرگتر); joined spellings like بزرگتر are common too.
The superlative moves in front of the noun and takes no ezafe: بلندترین کوه (bolandtarin kuh) - the highest mountain. دماوند بلندترین کوهِ ایران است. - Damavand is the highest mountain in Iran. Used like a noun before a plural or a possessor, it does take one: بهترینِ دوستانم (behtarin-e dustânam) - the best of my friends.
The order is the mirror image of English: 'a big house' is 'house-e big', خانهٔ بزرگ. Where English switches to 'more' for long adjectives, Persian keeps adding -tar, so 'more beautiful' is زیباتر (zibâtar). And the than-phrase sits in the middle of the sentence, before the adjective, not after it.
