English "this" and "that" are single words. Swedish builds them from two: den/det/de (agreeing with the noun) plus här (here) or där (there). So "this book" is literally "the-here book".
| this / these (near) | that / those (far) | |
|---|---|---|
| en-words | den här boken | den där boken |
| ett-words | det här huset | det där huset |
| plural | de här bullarna | de där bullarna |
This is the part English speakers forget. After den här and its partners the noun has the definite ending: den här boken, not *den här bok. It feels like saying "this the book", but in Swedish it is required.
Remember that de is pronounced "dom": de här sounds like "dom här".
When you introduce or point at something, use det här and det där whatever the gender or number: Det här är min bror. - This is my brother. Det där är våra grannar. - Those are our neighbours. Saying Den här är min bror would mean "This one is my brother", as if you were picking him out of a line.
In newspapers, official letters and signs you will meet the formal set denna, detta, dessa, followed by a noun without the ending: denna bok, detta beslut, dessa regler. In conversation, stick to den här.
