In a Swedish main clause, the conjugated verb stands in second place. English used to work this way and has kept a few fossils of it ("Here comes the bus"). In Swedish the rule is alive: whatever you put first, the verb comes next, and the subject moves behind it if it isn't first.
| Place 1 | Place 2: verb | Subject | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jag | läser | en bok i kväll. | |
| I kväll | läser | jag | en bok. |
| I Stockholm | bor | vi | nära tunnelbanan. |
| På vintern | snöar | det | mycket i Luleå. |
Place one can be one word or a long phrase: Efter jobbet, Varje fredag, Den här boken. Swedes start sentences with time and place all the time, so you will need this rule in almost every conversation.
English keeps subject before verb: "Today I work from home". Copied word for word: *Idag jag arbetar hemifrån, verb in third place. Swedish: Idag arbetar jag hemifrån. Practise with time words, because that is where the slip happens most: Sedan går jag till jobbet. På lördag åker vi till Göteborg.
The conjunctions och (and), men (but), eller (or) and för (because, for) stand outside the count; after them the clause starts again: Jag är trött, men jag går till jobbet. Compare Jag är trött. Ändå går jag till jobbet, where ändå (still) takes place one and the subject moves.
After words like att, eftersom, när, om there is no inversion, and short adverbs like inte come before the verb: Jag stannar hemma eftersom jag inte mår bra. Swedish teachers sum it up as BIFF: i bisats står inte före det finita verbet. See the topic on negation for more.
In yes/no questions the verb moves to the front: Arbetar du hemma idag?
