Albanian prepositions also decide the case of the noun that follows, so the noun after në may look different from the one after pranë. At A1, learn each preposition together with a whole phrase.

One word for "in", "at" and "to"

Në covers location and destination alike: Jam në Tiranë (I'm in Tirana), Shkoj në Tiranë (I'm going to Tirana). English speakers look for a separate word for "to"; there isn't one here. The verb tells you whether there is movement.

With people, use te instead: "I'm going to the doctor's" is Shkoj te mjeku, not *në mjeku. Shops and cafés named after a person or place work the same way: te Mulliri (at the Mulliri café).

The noun changes after some prepositions

Pranë, para and pas are followed by a form of the noun that often ends in -it or -ës: shtëpi becomes shtëpisë, det becomes detit. You do not need the case tables yet; learn pranë shtëpisë, para hotelit, pas shkollës as set phrases and the pattern will settle in.

Übungsaufgaben
Në is extremely versatile — it covers 'in', 'at', 'to', and 'on' in many contexts. Learners tend to overthink which preposition to use. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German two-way prepositions (in + Dat/Akk) have no equivalent — Albanian në works for both static and motion.

Unë banoj në Tiranë.

Ich wohne in Tirana.

Në = in (Ort). Banoj = ich wohne. Tiranë ohne bestimmten Artikel nach në.

Libri është mbi tavolinë.

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.

Mbi = auf/über. Tavolinë = Tisch (unbestimmte Form nach Präposition).
