Wochentage, Monate und Jahreszeiten

Days of week, months, seasons, and dates

Lernziel

Can name days, months, seasons, and express dates

Was haben sie gemeinsam?

Days of the week

lundi (Monday), mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche (Sunday). The French week starts on Monday, and calendars are printed that way.

Months

janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre.

Unlike English, French writes days and months with a small letter: lundi 3 mars, not *Lundi 3 Mars. They take a capital at the start of a sentence, like any other word.

No "on" before days

English says "on Monday"; French uses no preposition: Je travaille lundi. - I'm working on Monday. Add le for something that happens every week: Le samedi, je vais au marché. - On Saturdays I go to the market.

Seasons

All four seasons are masculine.

Season"In" + seasonExample
- In spring the cherry trees blossom.

The odd one out is spring: au printemps, because printemps starts with a consonant. Months take en as well: en mai, en décembre.

Dates

French gives the date as le + number + month, with a cardinal number: le 14 juillet (Bastille Day), le 25 décembre. English "the fourteenth of July" becomes "the fourteen July". The first day of a month is the exception: le 1er (premier) janvier, le premier mai. To ask the date: On est le combien aujourd'hui ? - On est le 3.

Übungsaufgaben
Capitalizing days/months; using wrong preposition with seasons. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English capitalizes days and months. French doesn't!
