Orvos vagyok.
Ich bin Arzt.
Ő mérnök.
Er/sie ist Ingenieur.
A húgom tanárnő.
Meine jüngere Schwester ist Lehrerin.
Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?
English says "I'm a doctor". Hungarian uses no article with a job or nationality after "to be":
| Hungarian | English |
|---|---|
| Orvos vagyok. | I'm a doctor. |
| Tanár vagy? | Are you a teacher? |
| Mérnökök vagyunk. | We're engineers. |
Egy orvos vagyok is a learner's sentence, a direct copy of English. To ask: Mi a foglalkozásod? or simply Mivel foglalkozol? - What do you do?
With "he / she is" and "they are" + a noun or adjective, the verb van is left out: Ő tanár. - She is a teacher. Ők diákok. - They are students. Anna magyar. - Anna is Hungarian. The first and second persons keep their verb: tanár vagyok, tanár vagy.
Many job titles have a female form with -nő ("woman"): tanár → tanárnő, orvos → orvosnő, színész → színésznő (actress). In schools, children address a female teacher as tanárnő or tanító néni. Do not confuse this with -né, which means "wife of": Kovácsné is Mrs Kovács, and orvosné is a doctor's wife, not a woman doctor.
| Hungarian | English |
|---|---|
| Nős vagyok. | I'm married. (a man) |
| Férjnél vagyok. / Férjezett vagyok. | I'm married. (a woman; the second is official) |
| Házas vagyok. | I'm married. (anyone) |
| Egyedülálló vagyok. | I'm single. |
| Elvált vagyok. | I'm divorced. |
| Van barátnőm / barátom. | I have a girlfriend / boyfriend. |
Two of the words for "married" depend on who is speaking (nős, literally "having a wife"; férjnél van, "is at a husband's"). Házas avoids the choice and is common in everyday speech. Official forms, from a hotel in Eger to a bank in Budapest, ask for családi állapot (marital status).
