Genus der Substantive

Maskuline und feminine Substantive — Muster und Ausnahmen

Lernziel

Kann das Genus der Substantive anhand von Mustern bestimmen und Ausnahmen erkennen

Prüfungskompetenzen:VISC A1

Schau dir diese Beispiele an. Kannst du das grammatische Muster erkennen?

O livro é bom.

Das Buch ist gut.

A cidade é bonita.

Die Stadt ist schön.

O problema é grande.

Das Problem ist groß.

Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?

Every Portuguese noun is either masculine or feminine - a table, a problem, a city. There is no "it" category, so you learn the gender with the word, best by learning the article with it: not casa but a casa.

EndingGenderExamples
-ousually masculineo livro, o carro, o gato
-ausually femininea casa, a mesa, a gata
-ção, -sãofemininea nação, a televisão, a estação
-dadefemininea cidade, a universidade, a saudade
-ma (words from Greek)masculineo problema, o sistema, o programa, o clima
-e, consonanteither: learn each oneo leite, a noite, o hotel, a flor

The exceptions you meet on day one

  • o dia - the day, masculine despite the -a: bom dia, not *boa dia.
  • o mapa - masculine despite the -a; learn it as an exception.
  • a foto - feminine despite the -o, because it is short for a fotografia. Likewise a moto (motocicleta).
  • a mão - the hand, feminine.
  • o problema, o tema, o idioma - the Greek -ma words above.

The -e group is the real work. A noite, a parte, a gente, a saudade are feminine; o leite, o nome, o pente are masculine. No rule saves you here.

People: one word, two forms

Many nouns for people switch -o to -a or add -a to a consonant: o aluno / a aluna, o menino / a menina, o professor / a professora, o português / a portuguesa. Words in -ista and -ente keep one form and show sex only through the article: o / a dentista, o / a estudante.

Why it matters to an English speaker

Gender is not just a label on the noun. Everything that goes with it agrees: articles, adjectives, possessives, even some numbers. O problema é sério - "the problem is serious" - takes a masculine adjective because problema is masculine, whatever its -a suggests. Learners who guess from the ending say *a problema é séria, and that is two mistakes from one wrong guess.

Übungsaufgaben
Assuming -a is always feminine (o dia, o mapa, o problema). Assuming -e nouns are masculine (a noite, a cidade). 🇩🇪 German speakers: 3 genders → 2. No neuter in Portuguese. Greek -ma words are masculine (das Problem → o problema).

O livro é bom.

Das Buch ist gut.

Livro endet auf -o → maskulin → o livro. Adjektiv 'bom' stimmt mit maskulin überein.

A cidade é bonita.

Die Stadt ist schön.

Cidade endet auf -dade → immer feminin → a cidade. Adjektiv 'bonita' feminin.

O problema é grande.

Das Problem ist groß.

Problema endet auf -a, IST aber maskulin (griechisches -ma). Häufige Falle! O problema, o sistema, o programa.
