Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?
Ter means "to have", and it reaches much further than the English verb. Portuguese says "I have hunger", "I have thirty years" and "you have reason" where English uses "be". It is also irregular, so the forms below need learning by heart.
| Person | Present | Example |
|---|---|---|
| eu | tenho | Tenho dois irmãos. - I have two brothers. |
| tu | tens | Tens tempo? - Have you got time? |
| você / ele / ela | tem | Ela tem trinta anos. - She's thirty. |
| nós | temos | Temos uma casa na praia. |
| vocês / eles / elas | têm | Vocês têm razão. - You're right. |
The circumflex on têm marks the plural. In Brazil tem and têm are pronounced the same; in Portugal the plural is longer, roughly "TAY-ayn".
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| ter fome | to be hungry |
| ter sede | to be thirsty |
| ter sono | to be sleepy |
| ter frio / ter calor | to be cold / hot (a person) |
| ter medo (de) | to be afraid (of) |
| ter razão | to be right |
| ter pressa | to be in a hurry |
| ter ... anos | to be ... years old |
Because the second word is a noun, you strengthen it with muito / muita, not with "very" as an adverb: Tenho muita fome - "I'm very hungry"; Ele tem muito medo de cachorro. For the weather, though, use estar or fazer: Está frio, Faz calor no Rio. Tenho frio is about your body.
The commonest error is translating age: *Eu sou vinte e cinco or *Estou vinte e cinco anos. Portuguese "has" its years: Tenho vinte e cinco anos, and you ask Quantos anos você tem? The opposite worry is unfounded: Estou com fome, "I am with hunger", is not a mistake. Brazilians say it at least as often as Tenho fome, and the same goes for estar com sede, com sono, com frio, com medo.

Ich habe Hunger.
Ter fome = Hunger haben. Genau wie im Deutschen! Englisch sagt 'to be hungry' — anders.
Ela tem trinta anos.
Sie ist dreißig Jahre alt.
Ter anos = Jahre haben (Alter). NICHT ser/estar. 'Ela é trinta anos' ist FALSCH.
Vocês têm razão.
Ihr habt recht.
Têm (3. Pl.) mit Zirkumflex. Tem (3. Sg.) ohne Akzent. Klingen im BP gleich!
