Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?
English "to be" has three present forms: am, is, are. Swedish has one. Whoever the subject is, the present of vara is är.
| Person | Present | English |
|---|---|---|
| jag | är | I am |
| du | är | you are |
| han / hon / den / det | är | he / she / it is |
| vi / ni / de | är | we / you / they are |
The past is just as simple: var for every person (Jag var i Uppsala i helgen - I was in Uppsala at the weekend). The other forms are vara (infinitive) and varit (Har du varit i Kiruna? - Have you been to Kiruna?).
Swedish often prefers a more precise verb where English says "is". For people's well-being: Hur mår du? - How are you? For things in a place, position verbs: Boken ligger på bordet (the book is on the table), Cykeln står utanför (the bike is outside). For feeling cold: Jag fryser - I'm cold. And "there is" is det finns, not *där är.
Är du svensk? - Nej, jag är norsk, men min sambo är från Örebro. - Are you Swedish? - No, I'm Norwegian, but my partner is from Örebro.
