Phát âm nâng cao — Advanced Pronunciation

Vietnamese syllables can end with only 8 final consonants: -c, -ch, -m, -n, -ng, -nh, -p, -t. These are all unreleased — your mouth closes but no air comes out!

FinalSoundExampleMeaning
-m/m/ lips closecơmrice
-n/n/ tongue tipăneat
-ng/ŋ/ back of tonguekhôngno
-nh/ɲ/ palatalxanhblue/green
-p/p̚/ unreleasedđẹpbeautiful
-t/t̚/ unreleasedmộtone
-c/k̚/ unreleasedhọcstudy
-ch/c̚/ unreleasedthíchlike

Unreleased stops: English 'cat' releases the final 't' with a puff of air. Vietnamese một — the tongue touches but does NOT release. This gives Vietnamese its characteristic clipped sound.

Tone + final interaction: The tones hỏi (ả) and ngã (ã) can ONLY occur on syllables ending in a vowel or nasal (-m, -n, -ng, -nh). Syllables ending in stops (-p, -t, -c, -ch) can only have sắc (á) or nặng (ạ).

Releasing final stop consonants and ignoring the tone-final rules. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Release final -p, -t, -c with a puff of air (English habit). Say 'một' as 'moht-TUH' instead of clipped 'moht'. Also add vowel sounds after final consonants. 🇩🇪 German speakers: Similar release problem. Also may voice final consonants (German Auslautverhärtung goes the opposite way). Tend to pronounce -ch as German 'ich' instead of unreleased /c̚/.

Häufige Fehlermuster

Released final stop consonants with a puff of air

Vietnamese final -p, -t, -c, -ch are UNRELEASED. Your mouth closes but no air escapes. Practice: say 'stop' and freeze at the 'p'.

Used hỏi/ngã tone on a stop-final syllable

Syllables ending in -p, -t, -c, -ch can ONLY have sắc (á) or nặng (ạ) tones. Hỏi and ngã only occur on open syllables or nasal-final syllables.

Một, hai, ba!

Eins, zwei, drei!
