الحروف: ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ي
This final group completes the 28-letter alphabet. Key sounds:
| Letter | Sound | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ع | ʿayn | Voiced pharyngeal — unique to Arabic/Semitic |
| غ | ghayn | Like French/German r (غ ≈ Parisian r) |
| ق | qāf | Deep uvular k — from back of throat |
| ط/ظ | ṭāʾ/ẓāʾ | Emphatic t / emphatic th |
و and ي serve double duty: as consonants (w, y) and as long vowels (ū, ī). ه at word-end can be confused with ة (tāʾ marbūṭa). ع (ʿayn) is the hardest sound for most learners.
Common Error Patterns
Dropped or replaced ع with glottal stop
Practice the pharyngeal constriction — ع is NOT a glottal stop
Confused ق (uvular) with ك (velar)
ق is from the very back of the throat; ك is a normal k
عَيْن
eye / spring
ʿayn — the letter ع is also the word for 'eye'. A voiced pharyngeal fricative.
قَلَم
pen
qalam — ق is uvular, deeper than ك (k). From same root as 'calligraphy'.
كِتاب
book
kitāb — from root ك-ت-ب (k-t-b = writing). ك is a regular k sound.
نور
light
nūr — و here is a long vowel ū, not the consonant w.
