الجملة الفعلية (Verbal Sentence)

Arabic has two sentence types. The verbal sentence (جملة فعلية) starts with a verb and follows VSO word order: Verb – Subject – Object.

Key rule: The verb is always singular when it comes before the subject, regardless of whether the subject is plural or dual.

Note: يدرسُ الطلابُ (verb singular!) vs الطلابُ يدرسونَ (subject first → verb is plural). Verb-first = verb stays singular.

Making the verb plural when it precedes a plural subject (يدرسون الطلاب ❌ → يدرس الطلاب ✓). 🇬🇧 English: English uses SVO — Arabic VSO puts the verb first, which feels inverted. 🇩🇪 German: German V2 rule puts the verb second — Arabic VSO puts it first. Both are different from English SVO.

Verb stays SINGULAR (يدرسُ not يدرسون) because it precedes the plural subject الطلاب.

أَكَلَت البِنتُ التُّفّاحَةَ

The girl ate the apple

أكلت (fem. verb) + البنت (fem. subject) + التفاحة (object in accusative).

كَتَبَ المُعَلِّمُ الدَّرسَ

The teacher wrote the lesson

كتب (past verb) + المعلم (subject, nominative) + الدرس (object, accusative: الدرسَ).
