Reflexivos que cambian el significado

ir/irse, dormir/dormirse, quedar/quedarse: when the pronoun changes the verb's meaning

Learning Goal

Can distinguish verb pairs whose meaning changes with the reflexive pronoun

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Nos vamos ya, que mañana madrugamos. —¿No os quedáis al café?

We're off now, we have to get up early tomorrow. — Aren't you staying for coffee?

Se puso rojo cuando le pedimos que cantara en la sobremesa.

He went red when we asked him to sing after lunch.

Me quedé dormido en el AVE y me llevé un susto al despertarme en Zaragoza.

I fell asleep on the AVE and got a fright when I woke up in Zaragoza.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

En A1 los reflexivos eran fáciles: me lavo, se ducha, uno se hace algo a sí mismo. En A2 aparece un grupo distinto y muy frecuente, donde el pronombre no significa «a mí mismo»: cambia el sentido del verbo.

VerboSin pronombreCon pronombre
ir / irseVoy al mercado. (destino)Me voy, que es tarde. (marcharse)
dormir / dormirseDuermo ocho horas.Me dormí en el sofá. (quedarse dormido)
quedar / quedarseQuedamos a las ocho. (citarse)Me quedo en casa. (permanecer)
poner / ponersePongo la mesa.Se puso el abrigo. / Se puso rojo.
llevar / llevarseLlevo gafas.

Practice Exercises
These verbs are not optional variants: 'voy' and 'me voy' answer different questions ('where to?' versus 'are you leaving?'). Learn the pair, not the verb. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses particles instead ('go' versus 'go away', 'fall asleep'), so the pronoun looks like decoration and gets dropped. It is not: 'me voy' without 'me' means something else.

Nos vamos ya, que mañana madrugamos. —¿No os quedáis al café?

We're off now, we have to get up early tomorrow. — Aren't you staying for coffee?

Irse means to leave (not to go somewhere); quedarse means to stay. The end of every Spanish dinner sounds exactly like this.

Se puso rojo cuando le pedimos que cantara en la sobremesa.

He went red when we asked him to sing after lunch.

ponerse + adjective is the standard way to say someone turned some way. Note that Spanish uses one verb where Russian and Czech use a prefixed verb.

Me quedé dormido en el AVE y me llevé un susto al despertarme en Zaragoza.

I fell asleep on the AVE and got a fright when I woke up in Zaragoza.

Three pronominal verbs in a row: quedarse dormido, llevarse un susto, despertarse. None of them means anything reflexive.
