Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

A mi abuela le duelen las rodillas cuando cambia el tiempo.

My grandmother's knees hurt when the weather changes.

¿Os apetece bajar a tomar algo? A mí me apetece muchísimo.

Do you fancy going down for a drink? I'd really love to.

A los vecinos del tercero no les gusta nada que ensayemos los sábados.

The third-floor neighbours don't like us rehearsing on Saturdays at all.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

—Pues a mí no.

Practice Exercises
The number one error is treating gustar like 'to like': *'Yo gusto el café' means 'I am pleasing to the coffee'. The second is agreement: 'me gusta las tapas' should be 'me gustan las tapas'. 🇬🇧 English speakers: The hardest L1 for this structure, because English makes the person the subject. Expect *'Yo gusto' errors for months, and drill 'me duele la cabeza' rather than translating 'my head hurts'.

A mi abuela le duelen las rodillas cuando cambia el tiempo.

My grandmother's knees hurt when the weather changes.

Plural body part, plural verb: le duelen. The 'a mi abuela' clarifies who 'le' refers to.

¿Os apetece bajar a tomar algo? A mí me apetece muchísimo.

Do you fancy going down for a drink? I'd really love to.

Apetecer with an infinitive stays singular. 'A mí me apetece' repeats the person for emphasis, which is completely normal.

A los vecinos del tercero no les gusta nada que ensayemos los sábados.

The third-floor neighbours don't like us rehearsing on Saturdays at all.

Gustar plus 'que' takes the subjunctive (ensayemos), because two different subjects are involved.
