Pedir y preguntar

Asking for something versus asking a question, plus the verbs that go with them

Learning Goal

Can distinguish requesting something from asking for information

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

I asked the waiter whether they had a set lunch and then ordered the twelve-euro one.

A lady came asking for you; she says you asked her for some papers.

I'm asking you to let me know when you get there, even if it's late.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

PEDIR (quieres algo)PREGUNTAR (quieres saber algo)

Practice Exercises
*'Pregunté un café' and *'Pedí dónde estaba la estación' are the two mirror-image errors. Check what follows: a thing → pedir, a question word → preguntar. 🇬🇧 English speakers: The hardest, because 'ask' covers both. 'I asked for the bill' and 'I asked where the bill was' look nearly identical in English and are completely different verbs in Spanish.

I asked the waiter whether they had a set lunch and then ordered the twelve-euro one.

preguntar + si (information), pedir + a thing. The classic restaurant sequence, and the clearest illustration of the rule.

A lady came asking for you; she says you asked her for some papers.

'Preguntar por alguien' means to ask after or look for someone — not to request them.

I'm asking you to let me know when you get there, even if it's late.

Pedir que takes the subjunctive because it influences someone else's action. Preguntar never does this.
