Practice Exercises
Learners forget to use instrumental case after před and struggle with the adjective agreement of minulý. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'ago' comes AFTER the time word (a year ago), but Czech před comes BEFORE and requires instrumental case (před rokem). Word order reversal plus case = double difficulty.

Common Error Patterns

Used wrong case after před (e.g., *před rok instead of před rokem)

před always requires instrumental case: před rokem, před týdnem, před hodinou, před dvěma dny.

Wrong adjective form of minulý with the time noun

minulý agrees in gender and case: minulý týden (M nom.), minulou sobotu (F acc.), minulé léto (N acc.).

Včera jsem se vrátil z dovolené.

Yesterday I came back from vacation.

včera (yesterday) — the most common past time marker. Invariable adverb, no case needed.

Přestěhovali jsme se před třemi lety.

We moved three years ago.

před + instrumental: třemi lety (three years, instrumental plural of rok/léto). Note: rok → lety in this expression.

Minulou sobotu jsme šli na výlet.

Last Saturday we went on a trip.

minulou sobotu — minulý declines like an adjective: minulou (fem. accusative, because time expressions use accusative).
