Exam Skills:ReadingWritingSpeaking

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Včera jsem pracoval celý den.

Yesterday I worked all day.

Ona studovala v Praze.

She studied in Prague.

My jsme bydleli v malém bytě.

We lived in a small apartment.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Český minulý čas se tvoří pomocí příčestí minulého (l-příčestí) a pomocného slovesa být.

OsobaPomocné sl.L-příčestí (M/F)Příklad
jájsemdělal / dělalaJá jsem dělal/a.
tyjsidělal / dělalaTy jsi dělal/a.
on/ona/ono—dělal / dělala / dělaloOn dělal. Ona dělala.
myjsmedělali / dělalyMy jsme dělali.
vyjstedělali / dělalyVy jste dělali.
oni/ony—dělali / dělalyOni dělali.

Tvorba l-příčestí: Infinitiv bez -t + koncovka: dělat → dělal, mluvit → mluvil, psát → psal. Rod: -l (M), -la (F), -lo (N), -li (M pl.), -ly (F/N pl.).

Důležité: 3. osoba (on/ona/oni) nemá pomocné sloveso! On dělal (ne *On je dělal).

Practice Exercises
Learners forget to drop the auxiliary být in 3rd person, or use wrong gender endings on the L-participle. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English past tense is a single word (I worked), so the two-part Czech construction (jsem + dělal) feels cumbersome. Speakers often forget jsem or put it in wrong position.

Common Error Patterns

Omitted the auxiliary být in 1st or 2nd person past tense

In 1st/2nd person, the auxiliary is required: já jsem dělal, ty jsi dělal, my jsme dělali, vy jste dělali. Only 3rd person has no auxiliary.

Used wrong gender ending on the L-participle

Match the participle to the subject's gender: -l (he), -la (she), -lo (it), -li (they masc.), -ly (they fem./neut.).

Včera jsem pracoval celý den.

Yesterday I worked all day.

jsem + pracoval (masc.) — 1st person past tense. The auxiliary jsem is required.

Ona studovala v Praze.

She studied in Prague.

3rd person feminine — no auxiliary! studovala (not *ona je studovala). The -la ending marks feminine.

My jsme bydleli v malém bytě.

We lived in a small apartment.

jsme + bydleli (masc. pl.) — 1st person plural. The -li ending is for masculine plural.
