Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Goedemorgen, ik woon in een groot huis.

Good morning, I live in a big house.

De trein naar Utrecht is blauw.

The train to Utrecht is blue.

Mijn schoen is schoon en nieuw.

My shoe is clean and new.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

The Dutch alphabet has 26 letters, like English. But pronunciation is very different!

Vowels (short vs. long): Dutch distinguishes short and long vowels: man (short a) vs. maan (long aa). In an open syllable, a single vowel is long: ma-ken.

Diphthongs: ei/ij [ɛi], ui [œy], au/ou [ʌu], eu [øː].

Consonants: The g and ch are guttural [ɣ/x] sounds. The sch at the start of a word = [sx], not [ʃ].

Learners struggle with the guttural g/ch sound and the ui diphthong. English speakers pronounce 'g' as [g], Germans confuse sch [sx] with [ʃ].

Common Error Patterns

Pronouncing g as English [g] instead of Dutch [ɣ/x]

The Dutch g is a guttural sound from the back of the throat, like clearing your throat gently.

Confusing short and long vowel pairs

Short vowels are in closed syllables (man), long vowels in open syllables (ma-ken) or doubled (maan).

Cannot produce the ui [œy] diphthong

Start with the French 'eu' sound and glide toward [y]. Practice: huis, uit, buiten.

Goedemorgen, ik woon in een groot huis.

Good morning, I live in a big house.

The 'g' in goedemorgen is the guttural [ɣ] sound. 'oo' in groot is the long [oː]. 'ui' in huis is the diphthong [œy].

De trein naar Utrecht is blauw.

The train to Utrecht is blue.

The 'ei' in trein and the 'au/uw' in blauw are key Dutch diphthongs: [ɛi] and [ʌu]. Utrecht has the long 'ee' sound [eː].

Mijn schoen is schoon en nieuw.

My shoe is clean and new.

The 'sch' in schoen/schoon is pronounced [sx], not [ʃ] as in German. 'oo' is long [oː], 'oe' is [uː], 'ieuw' is [iːu].
