Verb types 1-3 conjugation patterns
I can conjugate common type 1-3 verbs.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Minä puhun suomea.
I speak Finnish.
Hän syö lounasta.
He/she eats lunch.
Me tulemme huomenna.
We come tomorrow.
Hän lukee kirjaa.
He/she reads a book.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Verb Types 1-3
Finnish verbs are classified by their infinitive ending. At A1, learn types 1-3:
- Type 1 (-a/-ä): puhua, asua, lukea
- Type 2 (-da/-dä): syödä, juoda
- Type 3 (-la/-lä, -na/-nä, -ra/-rä, -sta/-stä): tulla, mennä, nousta
Key rule: 3rd person singular has a long vowel in types 1 & 3 (hän puhuu, hän tulee).
Forgetting 3rd person long vowel. Mixing up verb type patterns.
Common Error Patterns
Forgetting 3rd person long vowel (puhu instead of puhuu)
3rd person singular always has a long vowel for type 1 & 3.
Applying wrong conjugation pattern
Check infinitive ending: -a/-ä = type 1, -da/-dä = type 2, -la/-na/-ra/-sta = type 3.
Minä puhun suomea.
I speak Finnish.
Type 1 verb: puhua → puhu+n. Remove -a, add personal ending -n.
Hän syö lounasta.
He/she eats lunch.
Type 2 verb: syödä → syö (3rd person = stem alone, no doubling).
Me tulemme huomenna.
We come tomorrow.
Type 3 verb: tulla → tule+mme. Change -la to -le-, add -mme.
Hän lukee kirjaa.
He/she reads a book.
Type 1: lukea → lukee (3rd person doubles the final vowel of the stem).
