Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Mon père et ma mère sont gentils.

My father and my mother are kind.

Marie aime son frère et sa sœur.

Marie loves her brother and her sister.

J'aime mon amie.

I love my friend (female).

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Les adjectifs possessifs s'accordent avec la chose possédée (pas le possesseur) :

PossesseurMasc. sing.Fém. sing.Pluriel
jemonma (mon devant voyelle)mes
tutonta (ton devant voyelle)tes
il/ellesonsa (son devant voyelle)ses
nousnotrenos
vousvotrevos
ils/ellesleurleurs

Règle clé : Son/sa/ses s'accordent avec le nom, pas la personne ! Marie et son frère (son = masculine, because frère is masculine). Pierre et sa sœur (sa = feminine, because sœur is feminine).

Devant voyelle : ma/ta/sa → mon/ton/son : mon amie (pas *ma amie).

Matching possessive to owner's gender instead of possessed noun; forgetting mon/ton/son before feminine vowel-initial nouns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'his/her' matches the owner. French 'son/sa' matches the object. 'Her brother' = son frère (not *sa frère).

Common Error Patterns

Matched possessive to owner instead of possessed noun

Son/sa/ses agree with the THING, not the PERSON. Her brother = son frère (masculine noun).

Mon père et ma mère sont gentils.

My father and my mother are kind.

Mon (masc) for père, ma (fem) for mère. Agreement with the possessed noun.

Marie aime son frère et sa sœur.

Marie loves her brother and her sister.

Son frère (masculine noun → son). Sa sœur (feminine noun → sa). Even though Marie is female!

J'aime mon amie.

I love my friend (female).

Even though amie is feminine, we use 'mon' because amie starts with a vowel. Ma + vowel is avoided.
