Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Les adverbes de quantité modifient un verbe, un adjectif ou un nom :
| Adverbe | Sens | + verbe | + de + nom | + adjectif |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| beaucoup | a lot | Il travaille beaucoup. | beaucoup de travail | — |
| trop | too much | Tu manges trop. | trop de sucre | trop grand |
| assez | enough | J'ai assez dormi. | assez d'argent | assez grand |
| peu | little/few | Il dort peu. | peu de temps | — |
| très | very | — | — | très grand |
Règle clé : beaucoup/trop/assez/peu + de + nom (sans article !) : beaucoup de fromage (pas *beaucoup du fromage).
Très vs beaucoup : Très modifie les adjectifs/adverbes. Beaucoup modifie les verbes. Il est très grand (pas *beaucoup grand). Il mange beaucoup (pas *très).
Common Error Patterns
Used article after quantity adverb
beaucoup DE (not *beaucoup du/de la). Quantity words + de + noun without article.
Il y a beaucoup de monde ici.
There are a lot of people here.
Beaucoup de + noun (no article). Monde = people (uncountable in this context).
C'est trop cher et pas assez grand.
It's too expensive and not big enough.
Trop + adjective (too). Assez + adjective (enough). Très would mean 'very'.
Elle est très gentille et elle travaille beaucoup.
She is very kind and she works a lot.
Très + adjective (gentille). Beaucoup + verb (travaille). Never mix them up!
