Regular (-s) and irregular (-aux, -eaux) plural formation
Can form regular and common irregular plurals of French nouns
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Les enfants jouent avec les chats.
The children play with the cats.
Les gâteaux et les journaux sont sur les tables.
The cakes and newspapers are on the tables.
J'ai deux yeux et dix doigts.
I have two eyes and ten fingers.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
En français, le pluriel se forme généralement en ajoutant -s au singulier. Cette lettre est muette — on ne la prononce pas !

Pluriels irréguliers courants :
- un œil → des yeux
- monsieur → messieurs
- madame → mesdames
Important : L'article change aussi ! le/la/l' → les, un/une → des.
Common Error Patterns
Incorrect plural form (e.g., *journaux → *journals)
Review irregular plural rules: -eau→-eaux, -al→-aux, -eu→-eux. Words ending in -s/-x/-z don't change.
Les enfants jouent avec les chats.
The children play with the cats.
Enfants: enfant + s (regular). Chats: chat + s (regular). The -s is silent in both.
Les gâteaux et les journaux sont sur les tables.
The cakes and newspapers are on the tables.
Gâteau → gâteaux (-eau → -eaux). Journal → journaux (-al → -aux). Table → tables (regular -s).
J'ai deux yeux et dix doigts.
I have two eyes and ten fingers.
Yeux is the irregular plural of œil. Doigts: doigt + s (regular, the -s and -t are both silent).
