Press Language and Headline Grammar

Headline grammar: masdar titles, verbless clauses, participial compression, and the unverified-claim -o.

Learning Goal

I can read Georgian news fluently and tell reported claims from asserted facts.

Exam Skills:NAEC Georgian C2: Reading

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

სათაური: „ფასები არ გაიზრდებაო“ - მთავრობა გვპირდება.

Headline: 'Prices will not rise, they say' - the government promises us.

ლარი ისევ ვარდნაში - ეროვნული ბანკი დუმს.

The lari falling again - the National Bank stays silent.

გუშინ მიღებული კანონი დღესვე ამოქმედდა.

The law adopted yesterday took effect this very day.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Reading the front page

Georgian headlines compress aggressively: masdar headlines (პრემიერის გადადგომა - the PM's resignation), verbless clauses (ლარი ვარდნაში), participial attributes (გუშინ მიღებული კანონი), and the crucial quotative -ო that flags an unverified claim (გაიზრდებაო). Reading it fluently is daily-life C2 - and media literacy in one suffix.

Practice Exercises

Taking a headline -o claim as the paper's own assertion - the suffix says the opposite.

Common Error Patterns

Misreading headline -o as fact or stumbling on verbless headlines

Front-page drills: unfold ten headlines into full sentences with sources marked.

სათაური: „ფასები არ გაიზრდებაო“ - მთავრობა გვპირდება.

Headline: 'Prices will not rise, they say' - the government promises us.

Headline -o signals 'their claim, not ours' - one suffix doing a fact-check's job.

ლარი ისევ ვარდნაში - ეროვნული ბანკი დუმს.

The lari falling again - the National Bank stays silent.

Verbless headline: noun + locative masdar (vardnashi) - compression journalism.

გუშინ მიღებული კანონი დღესვე ამოქმედდა.

The law adopted yesterday took effect this very day.

Participial compression (migebuli) + intensifying -ve (dghesve): news prose's two best tools.
